Social capital is the missing link for workforce development programs

Research continues to question the efficacy of job skills training and credentialing without helping jobseekers develop the social capital to put these achievements to work.

The Missing Element

Social capital is the missing skill that students are not being taught in schools

Promising research shows that workforce outcomes are strengthened when interventions focus on developing social capital as well as human capital. If economic mobility and inequality is to be effectively addressed, low-income opportunity seekers, especially those of color, must receive assistance in analyzing social networks, building social capital, cultivating it, and the drawing from the resources that this social capital can provide. Without sustained access to these “opportunity networks,” a major part of the opportunity equation is missing.

Built on a Social Capital Centered Approach to Learning

A social capital centered approach to training enhances traditional instruction through its conscious and strategic use of personal  connections to support and enhance learning objectives and create opportunities that others never thought existed. At Social Capital Builders, we created this approach in 2018 to increase equitable economic outcomes for the millions of job seekers living in low income communities.

At the heart of this approach is a commitment by agencies to be truly assets based. A part of this commitment entails recognizing that all communities, and the people living in them,  possess assets that are often left undervalued and underutilized.

We help young people build social capital with the key, supportive adults
