About the Event
In our Social Network Analysis Academy, we teach staff how to help job seekers map opportunity networks and identify patterns of relationships and flows with people, groups, and organizations that can influence their economic and employment opportunities.
Through a process we developed called Opportunity Network Analysis (ONA), it may be surprising for programs to discover—for example—that a job seeker has participated in two different programs over the past two years and that no contact was ever made for continued assistance or support. Or, that a job seekers' uncle is an owner of several small businesses in the area. ONA may reveal that 50% of an opportunity seekers’ communication is with an aunt who lives 50 miles away. Opportunity network analysis will reveal opportunity seekers’ position in information exchange networks, and how, and if, labor market information is communicated, and the extent to which labor market entrance and advancement efforts are supported. Through ONA, programs will broaden their understanding of the social capital building process, evaluate the significance of each persons’ role, and develop strategies to support interactions to improve labor market access and mobility.
The goal of the social network academy is to assist organizations and the job seekers they serve in developing “Opportunity Connection Plans” with qualified familial, developmental, and gateway social capital assets (labor market mentors) within and outside of their communities.
By the end of the Social Network Analysis Academy, staff will:
- Explore strategies to assist job seekers in identifying opportunity networks, individuals who can be a source of labor market information and support.
- Develop strategies to assist job seekers in strategically linking to these labor market mentors for a period of one year or more.
- Learn how to conduct an Opportunity Network Analysis and utilize various social network analysis tools and assessments.
