In Social Capital Building for Workforce Development Mandagers, participants receive the knowledge and skills to build a social capital framework within their organization.
Social capital refers to the value of a person's connections with individuals, organizations, and institutions. Within a
social capital framework, programs can better assist job seekers (both youth and adults) in increasing their chances of employment and reliable income. This is especially true when serving low-income youth of color. The benefits of social capital can range from creating an environment that motivates youth to work in the early years to providing the connections and resources to help them obtain employment in the later years.
The purpose of the course is to train program managers about the value of social capital for today's job seekers and to help them make sound, strategic decisions about building a social capital framework within their organizations or company. Simply put, "a social capital framework recognizes that connections are a key determinant of labor market success and it utilizes structured activities to help job seekers connect to a wide range of social capital assets within and outside their community." With strong social capital connections, individuals can discover job opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise know about and find reliable sources of labor market information for career development and advancement.
Social Capital Building for Workforce Program Managers will:
- Teach managers the value of social capital and help them develop plans to assess the social capital levels of job seekers and staff.
- Help managers explore the power of familial, developmental and gateway social capital assets.
- Train managers about the importance of strong and weak tie connections and give them strategies to utilize these connections to increase job seekers' motivation and success.
- Equip managers with the tools to measure redundancy and strategies to offset its impact on job seekers' opportunities and outlook.
- Skill managers on strategies for addressing the six main barriers to social capital building among students and staff.
- Empower managers to assess the social capital strengths and weaknesses of their organizations and implement solutions to address them.
- Help managers understand the role of social media in the social capital building process.
Instruction will utilize Zoom, Google Classroom, and YouTube. The program consists of individualized activities, group discussions, a guest speaker, contests, games, and other fun methods of engagement.
Managers will be assessed via quizzes, polling, and activity completion in order to successfully complete the three-hour program, receive a certificate of completion, and qualify for Social Capital Building for Program Managers, Part Two.
